Paul Klee
This series of work is based on a trip to Venice. The place the historian Margaret Plant calls the The Fragile City. Paul Klee's quote influenced the approach to the work, not what a place literally looks like but how it feels through its fragile surfaces. The images were made through the combination of collagraph printing (1) with painting. The printing plates were made from materials found in Venice mainly sand and salt, materials of the sea. (1) A collagraph refers to a collage of materials glued on to a printing plate, which is made of cardboard. When glue is dry, it is shellacked or varnished so that it can be painted with acrylics. Paper is then pressed on to the surface to produce a print.
Brendan Reid studied printmaking at the Royal Collage of Art and has exhibited widely in the UK, Europe and the USA.
