With over thirty years of practice. Colin Brown has become Scotland’s most prominent collage artist.
Colin Brown grew up in the Scottish Highlands. One year he was given a large radio. The dial fascinated him with its seemingly random list of European place names. He remembers Lyon, Praha, Hilversum, Bremen, Goteborg, Rotterdam and Berlin but there were of course many others. This radio became his constant companion as he scrolled endlessly through the long and short wave bands picking up fragments of different languages and music.
The collection is all about his memories of travel, experience and his life long affinity with Europe in its many forms - and to celebrate diverse cultures, languages and traditions. Paying homage to specific cities he has spent time in. Some of the places he knows well. Each city in its own way represents a part of Europe he loves. While there’s a common geographical and cultural thread, each retains its own individual history and identity.
His paintings have received a number of awards, most notably a major Artist's Grant from The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, New York in 1996.
